finally fedora network install worked

finally its done.

the description is as follows..

Hi, here is the way to do the network installation of fedora core 2/3. So enjoy fedora 2 from http://download.fedora.redhat.com/ now.

Problem: creating the boot disk of fedora core 2 give problem as it say disk full. So we cannot boot into fedora core 2 kernel and then get access to the RPMs present on some network location like http://download.fedora.redhat.com/

Prerequisite to the making my solution possible: some version of linux preinstalled. May be RH8.0/9.0.

NOTE: don’t forget to read the end note.

I picked up this method from net... so it’s not my own method.

Actual method description can be seen on this page:

http://www.johnwyles.com/archives/2004/07/05/fedora_core_2_network_install.php

Anyways, so I will short write this method below:

  1. Create a dir by some name like fc2inst in /boot of current Linux installation.
  2. You need to get isolinux folders contents in this folder which come out to be approximately 5-7 Mb in size. This I will upload on infylug for fc2. They can be obtained from : http://downloads.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/2/i386/os/isolinux/
  3. Once the contents are copied, we need to change grub.conf to put another boot menu in it.

This is what I added:

title Fedora Core installation

root (hd0,5)

kernel /boot/f2inst/vmlinuz ro root=LABEL=/

initrd /boot/f2inst/initrd.img

One thing to note is if you have separate boot partition then you should put the path accordingly.

  1. Now done J just reboot the system and select fedora core 2 installation. And set up will start on itself
  2. If you are lucky enough, your entire H/W gets detected and it asks for the location from where to pick up the installation sources. Just provide following
  3. the web location path : download.fedora.redhat.com and directory as : pub/linux/fc2/allfiles
  4. It will start downloading stage2.img and it will load a graphical installer for you!!

Hope this works for you.

CAUTION: The most dangerous part is your /boot will get formatted during the installation, so whatever we just copied to f2inst folder will not going to be there anymore.

So if anything goes wrong during the installation times, you might be left with unbootable system with GRUB: prompt. So be careful and do all this only when you have ample time at your disposal. This is just a warning as chances of anything going wring in installation are minimal.

So enjoy fedora core installation now anywhere in infosys without fedora CDs in your hands.

HTH,

Vijay

DbVisualizer

In my first post i would like ypou all to get introduced with one my favourite database connector called DbVisualiser. you can get free version downloaded from www.minq.se/products/dbvis/

its a universal database connector which uses JDBC as primery connector for the database.
We can use the application to conenct ot DB2, HSQL, oracle, MS sql server and lot amny more.. simultaneously. the great feature list doesnt stop here. we can have the the diagrammatic representation of the data abse tables's with the relationsships shown in it. the diagram also is quite cutomizable.

also iot comes with a SQL commnader window where you can type the SQL and get it executed with the nice tabulated format.

the features givein here are avaliable in free edition also.
lot more feature are avaliable in the paid version like chart drawing. but i have no experience of them.

I wished to put some pictures over here. but seems its not possible because all the tools over here to upload pictures are are non-freeware. os not avalialbe with me.
sometime i would give detail about how to configure the DbVisualiser to get connected.

till then Byee..
